OpenTech says Extra Space's SmartEye monitoring cut security incidents and claims costs
Why this matters: our read
This is a vendor's account of one large customer, told partly through that customer's insurance executive. The claims-savings language is general, and the only dollar example offered is a hypothetical.
OpenTech Alliance, which sells the Insomniac SmartEye security monitoring service, announced on its website that Extra Space Storage has cut the volume and severity of security incidents and the related claims costs. Extra Space adopted the service in 2019 and has since put it at hundreds of properties, OpenTech said.
According to OpenTech, SmartEye pairs artificial intelligence with a live Virtual Security Team. Its monitors talk to people over facility speakers and call local authorities when a situation needs more than a warning. David Wiehe, Extra Space’s senior director of tenant insurance, is described by OpenTech as saying monitors spotted small fires and alerted authorities before major damage. He offered a hypothetical in which 10 claims fall from $10,000 each to $1,000 each.
OpenTech said Extra Space now builds SmartEye into plans for properties joining its portfolio where local conditions or nearby experience point to elevated risk. Most contacts end after a live spoken warning, the post says, and relatively few go on to police dispatch.
